Question 4 How can different ways of knowing help us to distinguish between something that is true and something that is believed to be true? True= justified belief that is commutable (other definitions?) 3 characteristic of truth: 1. Truth is public 2. Truth is independent of anyone’s belief 3. Truth is eternal (how do we know something is eternal??) Certainty of truth, the certainty spectrum Perception and its different filter, such as personal perception filter, social – economic filter, culture filter. We do not always perceive truth through these filters. Positive: multiple senses that can justify truth, empirialism Logic: logic error, gettier problem, logic is not always entirely logic Positive:deductive abductive inductive reasoning, Theorem(Math) and theory (for science) Emotion: Emotional coloring, Intuition Language: connotation, euphemism, jargon, emotion laden words, History ·Perspectives ·Depends who wins ·Language: connotations (ex. Crusaders vs. invaders)
Christian, Amir, Makiko: 1.What is the question asking? a.The difference between “true” and something that is “believed to be true” b.Definitions of “truth” VS “belief” c.Outline the different ways of knowing 2.KIs a.Is there a difference between truth and belief? b.Can culture/background affect one’s belief? c.How do perception filters affect “truth”/”belief”? d.How can emotions influence how we perceive “truth”? e.How does ambiguous language distort “truth”? 3.Types of personal connections a.Ie. Religion. If you’re religious you believe that God is true. However, atheists do not believe so. Putting your faith in something=you believe. b.Ie.
